Speak Up!

Assalamualaikum,

This is part of the script from possibly one of the greatest movies of all time, The Dark Knight.

Scene in a restaurant with Harvey, Bruce, Rachel and Natascha
Natascha: No, come on- how could you want to raise children in a city like this?
Wayne: I was raised here. I turned out OK.
Dent: Is Wayne Manor in the city limits?
Wayne: The Palisades? Sure. You know, as our new D.A. you might want to figure out where your jurisdiction ends.
Natascha: I'm talking about the kind of city that idolises a masked vigilante...
Dent: Gotham's proud of an ordinary man standing up for what's right.
Natascha: Gotham needs heroes like you- elected officials, not a man who thinks he's above the law.
Wayne: Exactly. Who appointed the Batman?
Dent: We did. All of us who stood by and let scum take control of our city.

Most people think that by remaining silent, not getting involved and staying out of trouble, they aren't affecting the world around them. They might think that even if they aren't doing any good, at least they aren't doing anything bad either. What they fail to realise is that silence is bad. When there are so many forms of injustice happening in our world today, everyone needs to stand up for something. Be it standing up against animal cruelty, promoting environmental awareness, fighting child abuse, anything. When no one speaks up, those who do wrong will continue to do so.

The media are doing their part as well. The Star's Facebook page is encouraging people to stand up against violence against women. ESPNSTAR have a TV advert for their show Monday Night Verdict which is encouraging people to speak their minds. A few individuals are seen with duct tape over their mouths, and eventually they peel off the tape, symbolising they are going to speak up.

So find something you believe in, and fight for it. Don't remain silent.

Darkness is merely the absence of light.
