11.11.11

Assalamualaikum,

I have never seen any significance in "special dates". I don't get why the new year is such a big deal. I don't make a big fuss on my birthday. I don't see how the month you were born in can determine your personality (referring to horoscopes). I don't get why some people choose "special dates" to get married. And I definitely see no significance in today's date.

People are talking about how today is so special, they want to do something special to remember today. They want to mark this day as the day they make changes and improve themselves (like making resolutions). People welcome today's date as if its some member of the royal family. Some people I bet will get married today. Congratulations to those who do, but like I said, you won't gain any special blessings from today's date. There's no mystical or magical force today, nothing can help you improve yourself today, it will come and go just like any other day.

Why wait until 11.11.11 to make resolutions to try and be better? Shouldn't that be your resolution everyday? If you want to do something significant in your life, why wait until 11.11.11? You should try and make everyday significant. Don't tell me you only do "special things" on "special days".

And for the Muslims, you should know that believing in such "mystical powers" that arrive on "special dates" is akin to syirik. Instead of these special dates that come once every 100 or 1000 years, we are given Fridays which is mentioned in the Quran to be the best of days. And we get a Friday every week!! Why not make resolutions every Friday to become better Muslims? And by the way, the fact that today is Friday means nothing. Today is just as important as any other Friday. The date has no impact on the berkat of Friday.

I admit, it is cool to be part of the world's population that witnesses a certain "special" date. But that's about it. When we die, God will not ask us what we did on this day, He will ask what we did everyday of our lives. If you make today special, you should make every other day special as well.

PS: A little rant-like I know. But I'm entitled to a little rant once in a while on my blog aren't I?
