The Value of Integrity

Assalamualaikum,

Time for another story!

There were these friends who worked as lecturers in a university. They were good individuals with good morals, stood up for what they believed in and did what they thought was right. They had been teaching together for quite some time but lately they were feeling under pressure and stressed out. Some of their students  were struggling in several subjects. They were lazy, too dependent on the lecturers for hints before exams, they weren't interested in learning. The lecturers tolerated them as much as they could, but even the best men (and women) have their limits.

With the new semester comes new students. And new challenges. These students apparently were more demanding, demanding hints for exams, and demanding to be passed even when they failed. Stumped, the lecturers met with their respected co-ordinators for help. Unfortunately the co-ordinators weren't much help. In order to maintain the good name of the university, producing graduates with good results and hence bringing in more students, the co-ordinators told the lecturers they had to pass the students anyway by any means necessary. Feeling uncomfortable with the situation they were in, they decided as soon as they could, they would quit the university.

Its quite inspirational really. Teaching is a noble profession. And those who really wish to teach can really make a difference in students' life. Safeguarding their futures in the process. Its become common for the current generations (including mine) of students to ask for hints before exams. To ask for pity marks in order to just pass an exam. And it doesn't help when administrators force lecturers to pass the students even when they don't deserve it just to guard the image of the university. The value of a proper tertiary education seems to have been lost in a time where only examination results are looked at.

This issue of integrity and doing what's right of course applies in all careers. As Muslims integrity is something of course that we need to have. If lets say one of the lecturers did as the co-ordinator said, and passed students who didn't deserve it, do you think they will be questioned about it on Judgement Day?

Never succumb into doing what you think is wrong. Its like I said on my Twitter yesterday, "Never feel ashamed/scared to do what's right. Your friends might leave you, but Allah will always be with those who do right.."
