Real-life Dakwah

Assalamualaikum,

The other day my brother and I went to the surau in Midvalley. Just before we were about to pray this elderly Middle Eastern guy comes to us and encourages us to pray jemaah, telling us it is 27 times better. Me and my brother already know this, but we just let him finish talking and wait for him to leave.

To this I have a question; How many of us would actually go up to a stranger, and give some advice? I don't mean advice like you read in newspaper or magazine columns, I'm talking about amar ma'ruf nahi munkar.

"Let there arise out of you a band of people inviting to all that is good, enjoining what is right, and forbidding what is wrong: They are the ones to attain felicity."
Quran 3:104

It's easy for us to give reminders to each other in controlled environments, like blogs (like what I do), via Facebook or Twitter, in classroom tazkirah, but its a whole different thing to actually go up to a young couple holding hands and hugging in public and telling them that what they are doing is wrong.

Most of us (even me) are scared of how they would react to us giving them advice. We are scared of being ridiculed for trying to do the right thing.

"Eleh, jangan sibuk lah kau!"
"Kau ni macam lah bagus sangat!"
"Alaa..rilek lah..enjoy sikit apa salah?"

I admit, even I haven't been brave enough to speak out against clear misconduct. With the majority of society today getting more and more brazen, more "Western", with religious authorities being slammed for doing what is right (remember the anti-V-Day campaigns?), how are normal everyday people like us supposed to go up to people and say "What you are doing is wrong"?

It definitely won't be easy. And we are likely to encounter a lot of hostility, but hey, somebody's gotta do it. We must do what we are capable of. Allah doesn't place a burden on anyone that they can not handle. Which is why we should do only what we can. And to me, going up to a bunch of kids acting inappropriately in public is definitely within our capabilities.

May the force be with you.

aku teringat kisah kawan aku deal dengan satu couple yang berdua-duaan dalam satu rmah buruk.

"eh, korang buat apa nih?"

"jangan sibuk boleh tak, ini kampung aku. suka hatilah kau nak buat apa"

"habis, ini bumi siapa punya?"

terus mamat tu diam.
