Assalamualaikum,
Growing up we were all taught to never lie. We were told that honesty is the best policy and that once we lie, most likely we're gonna hafta lie again to cover it up. Lies perpetuate lies.
However as we grow older, lying becomes more common. We lie to parents, to friends, co-workers, bosses, girlfriends, boyfriends, husbands, wives, anyone and everyone. Its like my friends' imaginary boyfriend (House M.D) said, "Everyone lies".
Now just because everyone does it, doesn't make it right. But the fact is that everyone does lie. I was watching an episode of Bones earlier, and in this episode there was this group of people who basically, don't lie. They are brutally honest with everyone and as a result, one of the members got beaten up almost on a daily basis. Lost his job, his wife left him, his son wanted nothing to do with him, and eventually his honesty cost him his life.
Also during this episode, the importance of white lies surfaced. White lies are lies you tell to protect another person's feelings. Like if your friend baked you a cake for your birthday which you didn't really like, but you say it was delicious anyway to protect their feelings, that's a white lie. So the argument was that without white lies, society would be in chaos. If everyone told the truth everytime, we would live in a very angry world. Social life would be hell. And there is some truth to that I think.
So what's more important? Honesty or protecting someone's feelings? People like Simon Cowell or Gordon Ramsey will say that honesty is more important than people's feelings. As for me, I'm quite honest most of the time with my friends, sometimes I have been a bit too blunt and have hurt some people. But at the same time I do try to sugar coat my honesty, sometimes.
Like I always say, balance is key. It doesn't matter what we talk about, balance is always the best way to go. Like the cake example I gave above, I would say thanks, but maybe ask my friend to try another recipe because the cake wasn't the best I've tasted =p
What would you do?

hi jazli..
yeah.. i get what you mean.. but there are a few that would defined it as being twofaced when our intention is clearly to be "polite"..
actually if i were to live in a world where lying has a meter limit, i had deffo surpassed that..specially cz my gramma lives with me..so, for certain things, lying would be the best solution to make things easier. lol although i dun not recommend u to follow my footsteps but thats how it is.. :)
