Assalamualaikum,
There have been many people who claim they can predict when life as we know it will come to an end. Some of them are self-appointed prophets, some are fortune-tellers, some are even groups of scientists. One thing they all have in common, is that they will never get it right.
As crestfallen followers of a California preacher who foresaw the world's end strained to find meaning in their lives, Harold Camping revised his apocalyptic prophecy, saying he was off by five months and the Earth actually will be obliterated on Oct. 21.
I bet when he's wrong again in 5 months he'll offer another excuse. All people of the book, as far as I know, believe in Judgement Day, and that no one knows when it'll be, except for God. In Islam, as highly as Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is looked up to, even he has no knowledge on when this day will be.
I know many people just laugh when someone predicts when the day will come, but there are many followers of people like Harold Camping.
One reason why man doesn't know when the day will come, and its a good one, is that not knowing will make people more cautious. Not knowing when the day will come, and not knowing when we will die will keep us on our toes. We should not assume we will live a long life. For all we know, we could die tomorrow. We never know. There's a saying something like live today like its your last. That's the practicality of not knowing when we will die.
Men ask thee concerning the Hour: Say, "The knowledge thereof is with Allah (alone)": and what will make thee understand?- perchance the Hour is nigh!Quran 33:63
