Valentines: Here We Go Again

Assalamualaikum,

Every year come February, we are sure to hear the same old argument about whether or not Valentine's Day should be practised in a Muslim community/country. Here in Malaysia, where we have both Muslims and non-Muslims, it becomes tricky. Some non-Muslims don't really understand why some people feel that V-Day should be disallowed. Heck, we even have Muslims who are pro V-Day. Most arguments stem around the history of V-Day. How it was "created", and the Christian influence it has. I'm not gonna get into that. I'm just gonna try and rationalise why I think, we should not promote V-Day to the younger Muslim generation.

What exactly is V-Day all about? Love? Romance? Here are some news articles related to what most people believe V-Day is all about.

“For example, several years ago, a hotel in Kuala Terengganu offered free rooms for 100 couples on first-come-first-served basis.

“Last year, there was a campaign to promote a no-panties day in conjunction with Valentine’s Day,” he said.

A shop in the US state of Alabama on Tuesday launched a Valentine's Day offer it hopes will trigger a large response in a limp economy: customers can swap their guns for sex toys.

What's the theme in these two excerpts? Sex. Oh wait, you know what one of the new movies to be released Valentines week this year is? No Strings Attached. You know what it's about? Friends with benefits, which eventually I assume will lead to a romance. Weird this kind of movie is released Valentine's week don't you think?

Some purists will believe that V-Day is not all about sex. They will say that it's about love and romance. Well the reality of it is that the majority of the world's population although they may initially relate V-Day with love and romance, still relate it with one other thing; sex. And that is not something we want to be promoting to the youth of the Muslim population in Malaysia.

Our youth has been exposed to enough sex-oriented movies and music. Do we really need a "holiday" which promotes the same? Kids nowadays don't need another excuse to mess around. They can do so anywhere anytime.

SEVERAL couples have been spotted using the emergency lane of the Kajang-Seremban Highway (Lekas) to smooch.

The lonely stretch is being used as a lovemaking point from midnight to 3am, reported Berita Harian.

V-Day may have originally been a holiday for people truly in love to express their feelings with one another. But in today's world, I just think it does more harm to our youth than good.

As for the married population, you don't need to wait for the 14th of February to buy flowers and chocolates for your loved ones. You can do so anytime throughout the year.

I know the same arguments will arise again next year, but for what it's worth, I am still against V-Day.

assalamualaikum.

I second your opinion as well. V-day shouldn't be recognised especially not by the Muslims. Like you said, it promotes more negativity than positivity.

V-day isn't the way it used to be i.e. more sacred and of value

wallahua'alam
